Racecourse redevelopment
The Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club has been through an exciting phase of redevelopment in recent times and in 2010, it emerged as a proud club with first class racing and hospitality facilities.
With support from the State Government and Thoroughbred Racing SA, $13 million was spent redeveloping the racecourse. This upgrade included the following:
- The construction of a new race track with a circumference of 1840 metres and a home straight of 300 metres compared with the old straight of 200 metres. This design should enhance punter confidence and off-course betting.
- The construction of a new grass training track and sand track inside the course proper.
- New race day facilities for jockeys and race day officials.
- A new purpose-built function centre, which will service race day patrons and be available for hire to the Gawler community on non-race days. This facility will accommodate 350 people.
- The removal of the old grandstand.
The Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club will hold its first race on the new track in July 2010, celebrating a new phase of state-of-the-art racing in South Australia.
